Aboriginal people knew these waters as the “narrows of the Great Spirit” (in Cree, “Manito bau”). In stormy weather, waves crashing on the limestone rocks of the narrows resounded eerily, and people believed the sound came from a huge drum beaten by Manitou. (Manitoba Historical Society).
The Narrows are the only place on Lake Manitoba that a bridge can cross. The bridge was constructed in the late 1960s and opened the access between the interlakes region and western Manitoba without having to back track.
The population is predominantly seasonal that are some permanent residents.
