Tumbler Ridge was a coal industry planned town carved out of the forest in the 1980s. After dinosaur footprints and fossils were discovered in the municipality, the Peace Region Paleontology Research Center opened in 2003, followed by a dinosaur museum.

Nearby recreational destinations include numerous trails, mountains, 10 waterfalls, snowmobiling areas and provincial parks, such as Monkman Provincial Park, Bearhole Lake Provincial Park, and Gwillim Lake Provincial Park.
